Volunteer Creative Writers, Local Journals & Community Blog

We're looking for passionate, curious writers who want to capture the real heartbeat of St Albans and Harpenden: through personal journals, community stories, and blog posts that celebrate everyday life in our towns. Whether you've been writing for years or you're just starting out, this is a genuinely rewarding volunteer opportunity to hone your craft while contributing something lasting to the local community. We publish across The Social Martini's community blog and curated local newsletters. **What you'll be writing about** - Neighbourhood stories: the hidden gems, the long-standing locals, the new arrivals shaking things up on Chequer Street, St Peter's Street, and beyond - Seasonal journals: markets, fetes, half-term activities, summer fairs, Christmas in St Albans, bonfire nights in Harpenden - Business spotlights: short profiles of independent shops, cafés, artisans, and service providers who make these towns unique - Community voices: pieces from local parents, commuters, dog walkers, allotment holders: real people, real perspectives - Event write-ups: festivals, theatre nights at the Alban Arena, farmers markets, pop-up exhibitions **What we're looking for** - A genuine love for St Albans or Harpenden: you live here, you know it, you care about it - Clear, warm, engaging writing: we're not looking for formal journalism, we want authentic voices - Reliability: even if it's just one piece a month, we need writers who commit and follow through - Curiosity and creativity, the best pieces often start with 'I wonder why…' or 'has anyone ever noticed…' **What you'll get** - A published byline on The Social Martini platform (read by thousands of local residents) - Editorial support and light copy-editing from our content team - A growing portfolio of published work to take anywhere - Early access to local events and business openings for story research - A warm, supportive community of fellow writers to collaborate with This is a volunteer role, no payment, but it is a genuine opportunity to build a writing portfolio, connect deeply with your local community, and be part of something that celebrates the best of where we live.
